How to Add Podcasts to Your Yoto Player

The Complete Guide: RSS Feeds, Downloads, Single Shows, and Custom Playlists

Most users only scratch the surface of the Yoto player, primarily using Yoto's physical card library — audiobooks, music albums, and stories — and never realise that the same device can become a gateway to thousands of free kids podcasts.

Beyond loading a single podcast feed, you can build curated playlists mixing your favourite episodes from different shows, then get them onto a card as either a streaming RSS feed or a fully offline download. That flexibility is what makes podcasts on Yoto genuinely powerful.

This guide covers every method, from the simplest single-podcast setup to custom multi-show playlists - with step-by-step instructions for each.

First: Two Ways to Load Podcasts onto Yoto

Before diving in, it helps to understand the two different approaches, because they suit different situations.

RSS Feed (Streaming)

You link a podcast’s RSS feed to a MYO card. The card streams episodes live whenever it’s played. It's fast to set up and auto-updates with new episodes, but requires WiFi — it won’t work offline or in the car without a hotspot.

Downloaded Audio Files (Offline)

You download episode files and add them like a standard MYO card. This takes longer, but plays completely offline — in the car, on planes, anywhere. If a podcast releases new episodes, they won’t appear automatically.

For home listening, RSS is the fastest and easiest option. For car journeys and travel, downloading takes more time upfront but works without any connection. Both methods use a Make Your Own (MYO) card.

What You’ll Need

  • A Yoto Player or Yoto Mini
  • The Yoto app installed on your phone
  • A Make Your Own (MYO) card (PS - the welcome card your Yoto came with is a MYO card!)
  • A WiFi connection for setup (and ongoing, if using RSS)
  • kidspodcasts.com (you're here - hello!)

The Methods

1

Add a Single Podcast via RSS Feed

Best for: Home listening, always-updated content, single shows you love.

Step 1: Find the RSS Feed

Every podcast on kidspodcasts.com has its RSS feed link ready to copy on the podcast’s page — no searching required. Just find the show you want, copy the RSS link, and you’re ready for the next step.

Spotify-exclusive podcasts don’t have public RSS feeds and cannot be added to Yoto. All podcasts on kidspodcasts.com are free and compatible.
Step 2: Add the Podcast in the Yoto App
  1. Open the Yoto app on your phone
  2. On the "Library" page, navigate to the Podcasts tab — this is a separate tab, usually shown in blue. It is NOT the MYO "Playlists" tab
  3. Tap "Add a Podcast"
  4. Paste your RSS feed link into the box
  5. Tap "Get Podcast Details" — the show artwork and title should appear
  6. Tap Save

Your podcast now lives in the “Podcasts” section of the app.

Step 3: Link It to a MYO Card
  1. In the app, find your saved podcast in the Podcasts tab
  2. Add the playlist to a MYO card by tapping "Link to Card" and follow the in-app instructions

That card will now play the podcast whenever it’s inserted, and automatically include new episodes as they’re published.

2

Download a Full Podcast Feed or Playlist for Offline Use

Best for: Car journeys, travel, offline listening, shows you want to save permanently.

Rather than streaming, you can download a podcast’s episodes as audio files and load them onto a MYO card — exactly like loading any other audio content. kidspodcasts.com makes this easy with a bulk download option for entire podcast feeds.

Step 1: Find the Podcast or Podcast Playlist on kidspodcasts.com
  1. Go to kidspodcasts.com
  2. Search for the podcast you want by name, or browse by age group or topic
  3. Open the podcast's page
Step 2: Bulk Download the Feed or Download Individual Episodes
  1. On the podcast page, select "Download All" to bulk download the feed
  2. The site will package the episodes as downloadable audio files
  3. Alternatively, download the indivudal episodes you want by tapping the download button on an episode card
  4. Save them to your phone or computer
  5. If downloading on mobile, go to the location they were saved and "unzip" the folder
MYO cards hold a maximum of 100 episodes or 5 hours of audio. If a podcast feed exceeds these limits, you’ll need to select a subset or spread them across multiple cards.
When downloading on mobile, downloads will automatically default to zip files up to 10 episodes due to browser lmits. When downloading on desktop, episodes will download as individual files. The "Most Recent for Yoto" option automatically defaults to download only what will be in compliance wit Yoto's limits.
Step 3: Load the Files onto a MYO Card
  1. In the "Library" page of the Yoto app, select the "Playlists" tab.
  2. Create a new playlist by adding a title and upload the downloaded audio files by selecting "Add audio files"
  3. Once the episodes are uploaded, click "Create Playlist"
  4. Add the playlist to a MYO card by tapping "Link to Card" and follow the in-app instructions

Your card will now play those episodes fully offline — no WiFi needed.

3

Build a Custom Playlist and Stream It via RSS

Best for: Mixing episodes from multiple shows, themed playlists, always-on home listening.

The standard Yoto podcast setup links one show per card. But what if you want a card that plays your child’s favourite episodes from several different shows? A bedtime card mixing Little Stories for Tiny People, Circle Round, and Calm Down Mind? A science card pulling the best episodes from Brains On, Wow in the World, and But Why?

That’s not possible natively in the Yoto app — but kidspodcasts.com makes it straightforward.

Step 1: Browse and Build Your Playlist
  1. On the My playlists tab of kidspodcasts.com create a new playlist (tap "Create Playlist")
  2. In the Search tab, search or browse to find episodes you want — filter by age, topic, or show name
  3. On any episode card, tap "+ Add"
  4. Keep adding episodes from as many different shows as you like — there's no limit on how many shows you can pull from
Step 2: Review Your Playlist
  1. Open your playlist to review the episodes and order
  2. Reorder, remove, or add more episodes until you're happy with it
  3. Give the playlist a name
Step 3: Generate the RSS Feed or download
  1. When your playlist is ready, select the way you want to connect your playlist by either tapping "RSS Feed" or "Download"
  2. Depending on your connection method follow method 1 or method 2

Your card now plays your custom curated playlist — specific episodes, from multiple shows, in the order you chose.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Podcast Cards

Make themed cards rather than show-by-show cards. Instead of one card per podcast, build cards around themes or moods — "Bedtime Stories," "Car Journey Science," "Rainy Day Laughs." Custom playlists make this possible without juggling a dozen cards.
Let kids choose. A ring of labelled podcast cards that kids can pick themselves builds listening independence — and quickly tells you what they actually enjoy.
Rotate seasonally. RSS cards are easy to update — just re-link them to a new feed in the app. Swap in a Halloween spooky stories playlist in October, a Christmas one in December. Downloaded cards can be wiped and reloaded just as easily.
Pre-screen new shows. Even shows aimed at kids occasionally cover topics worth previewing for younger or more sensitive listeners. A quick listen to a couple of episodes before committing to a card is always worthwhile.

Troubleshooting

"We couldn't find a supported audio stream."

Check that you're pasting into the Podcasts tab. This is the most common mistake and this error shows when you're accidentally under Playlists and added the URL under "Add a Radio Stream". Also confirm the show is freely available — Spotify-exclusive podcasts won't work.

"My podcast card won't play in the car."

RSS cards require WiFi. Switch to the download method for offline and car use.

"The card stopped updating with new episodes."

Yoto had a period of issues with podcasts, which has been attributed to the increasingly complex URLs podcasts use. Another reason may be that the podcast may have changed RSS feed URLs or been taken down. If it's an active podcast, delete it from the app and re-add it.

"My downloads are in a zip folder (or the folder is "greyed" out"

Before adding the audio files, go to the folder they were downloaded to and unzip the folder first.

"I want more than 100 episodes on one topic."

Split across two MYO cards. Label them "Volume 1" and "Volume 2" — kids often enjoy the collection aspect of having multiple cards for a favourite theme.

The Yoto podcast setup takes only a couple minutes the first time. After that, adding new shows and playlists becomes second nature — and the combination of themed cards, curated playlists, and offline downloads gives you a genuinely flexible audio library that grows with your child.

Happy listening.
